The crisis in the European automotive industry is being discussed in the European Parliament in Strasbourg today.

The European Commission will clarify the current state of the industry and the fact that companies in the US and Europe are seeking government support.

On Monday Opel executives met with the German Chancellor, Angela Merkel, to request guarantees. One newspaper reported that Opel needs guarantees of at least 1.8bn euros. There are concerns that European competition laws will not allow Germany to support one manufacturer exclusively.

The German government has said it will decide by Christmas whether to guarantee the company.
