The Wall Street Journal reported on its website at the end of last week that Bernhard is highly likely to leave after the Volkswagen group supervisory board meeting in January. The WSJ quoted ‘informed people’.
It said that Bernhard has been trying unsuccessfully to influence the management board not to change the current structure of the company, as proposed by the group’s new CEO, Martin Winterkorn. Bernhard’s role will be diminished in the restructuring.
Bernhard has been offered a position as head of production across the group but has turned this down on the grounds that his contract is for the position of head of the Volkswagen brand until 2010.
