Sales of new imported cars in Japan, including Japanese brands built abroad, fell by 37.7% year-on-year in November, according to data released by the Japan Automobile Importers Association (JAIA).
 
The economic downturn and the dent to consumer confidence has been particularly felt at the high-end of the market, where imports are concentrated.
 
Sales fell for the seventh straight month to 13,543 units, the lowest level in twenty years for the month of November, the Japan Automobile Importers Association said.

Sales of foreign-brand vehicles fell 36.7% to 11,844 units, while those of Japanese-brand cars built overseas fell 44.1% to 1,699 units.
