In contrast to the sales fall, which reflected a general slump in car sales in Spain, Ford production here increased 13% to 420,544 units amid strong demand for the Almussafes, Valencia-made Ka supermini, Mazda 2 and Ford Focus.

Ford said it sold 143,070 passenger cars and 34,200 commercial vehicles. The Focus, Mondeo and Fiesta were the top-selling models.

Ford did not detail the drop in passenger vehicle sales but said commercial sales increased 13%, headed by the Connect, Transit and Ranger.

Volkswagen attributed last year’s sales hike to intense promotion and model updates.

“All of our brands did very well and there have been a lot of promotions and new launches,” a VW spokesman told just-auto.

The VW brand sold 107,101 units, up 4.4% over 2005, boosted by the Golf, Polo and Passat models.

Audi sales rose 10% to 53,837 units, fuelled by strong demand for its A4 and A3, VW added.

The Octavia model range was top seller at Skoda, with a volume increase of 15% to 24,869 units.
