Ford Canada announced Thursday(10/08/00) it was recalling up to 283,000 vehicles as part of the Bridgestone/Firestone Inc. effort to replace tires possibly linked to road accident fatalities.

Ford customers who own vehicles with the suspect tires can go to any of the 565 Ford Canada dealers for inspection and replacement of the tires in question.

A total of 180,000 vehicles were being recalled to have the tires replaced: Explorers and Rangers made in 1991-96, and some F-150 pickup trucks made in 1991-94, Arnone said.

Another 103,000 vehicles were being recalled for inspection and possible replacement of tires: Rangers and some Explorers made in 1997-2000, the spokesman said.

Bridgestone/Firestone are yet to announce final details concerning a recall plan for Canada. In the United States, customers who bought vehicles with the suspect tires will receive letters notifying them of the recall in a process expected to be completed by the end of 2001.

It has been reported that Ford Canada has been inundated with telephone calls from worried customers and wanted to give them the chance to begin the recall process immediately.
