Car manufacturers and automotive component suppliers in the Czech Republic are expected to lay off more than 13,000 workers by the middle of next year, an auto industry group has said.
The Czech Car Industry Association said in a statement that its survey of 127 companies showed 13,552 workers will likely lose their jobs in first six months of 2009. It said the suppliers are to be hit hardest.

More than 135,000 people are employed in the industry.
The director of the Automobile Industry Association (AIA), Antonin Sipek recently told just-auto that the first round of cuts were likely to come from agency (temporary) workers.
“None of the companies intend to make too rapid decisions regarding their regular qualified employees,” he said. Sipek added he believed that any possible cut backs in employee numbers would mostly come from supplier companies.
Skoda may cut around 870 jobs, or around 3% of its workforce, during 2009.
Skoda has already cut production by around 31,000 units this year. Nevertheless it will still produce around 690,000 vehicles, up 9.5% on a year ago.
