General Motors Europe and energy supplier Iberdrola have agreed a feasibility study for recharging networks in Spain and the UK for plug-in electric cars.

They will analyse the requirements for the location of plug sockets in private homes and offices, and public or private parking, and for the installation of electricity meters. They will also study E-REV technology and the electrical network capacity and will specify the conditions for the electrical charge of vehicles.


The two firms want to encourage the development of electric vehicles, in particular extended-range models like GM’s upcoming Chevrolet Volt.


Both companies already work together on a plug-in electric vehicle project.


They plan eventually to reach agreements with local and national governments to set up recharging networks in both countries.


Iberdrola is the main energy supplier in Spain and the third largest gas storage company and distributor in the United Kingdom.
