This is Maruti’s first new diesel for several years. The company had previously offered an oil-burning Esteem some years back but it was soon dropped due to lack of demand, according to the automaker.

The diesel Swift comes with two trim/equipment levels dubbed LDI and VDI; the latter has standard anti-lock brakes.

The diesel is a 1.3 litre DOHC Suzuki unit with common rail direct injection developing 75bhp at 4,000rpm and 190Nm of torque at 2,000rpm.

The engines are made at Matuti’s plant in Manesar, near Gurgaon, keeping the price competitive.

Maruti has also announced plans to redesign the Indian-market Baleno and launch two new cars, one of which would rival the Honda Civic and Toyota Corolla.
