Any why not? After all, the larger Outlander, the company’s first crossover, is doing well – so much so it has been re-nosed and re-engined for PSA brands Citroen and Peugeot to sell as well.
According to its maker, the Concept-cX “represents a new-generation compact SUV, realising an ideal balance between environmental and everyday practical performance”. Just like, say, the Nissan Qashqai then.
However, the MMC concept has a new high-output, high-efficiency 1.8-litre ‘clean’ diesel with variable geometry turbocharger for optimum boost control and a diesel oxidation catalyst (DOC) plus diesel particulate filter to comply with Europe’s new Euro 5 emission standards. This is combined with the new Twin Clutch SST transmission also earmarked for top new Lancer models.
‘Environmental technologies’ include interior trim materials made from Mitsubishi’s own ‘green plastic’ — made from bamboo and other plant-based resins.
Mitsubishi said the high seating position expands the driver’s field of view, providing the drivability expected in a SUV while the 4,100 mm-long compact body makes for easy manoeuvering around town; and the split tailgate — also an Outlander feature — makes for easy loading and unloading of luggage.
The driveline includes electronically controlled 4WD and the concept rides on 225/45R19 tyres.
No mention yet of Peugeot and Citroen versions.
