The driver sits centrally, with two seats either side, while the steering wheel and controls are inspired by computer game-like interfaces.

It is powered by the automaker’s ‘Super Motor’ electric motor/generator and using compact lithium-ion batteries, is said to have “unusually rapid” performance combined with a usefully extended range. One Super Motor powers the front axle and a second drives the rear axle.

The rear hatch opens to a large load area behind the three seats and an occasional fourth seat is housed behind the front seat module.

Built on a 2,530mm wheelbase, the Mixim is 3,700mm long, 1,800mm wide and 1,400mm high – shorter and lower than the current production Micra/March, though slightly wider. It weighs 950kg.

Nissan said this is a a concept car with no guarantee of being turned into a production model but its development is in line with the automaker’s Nissan Green Programme, the company’s publicly stated desire to create a more sustainable mobile society.

Nissan will also display the Micra Colour + Concept show car designed at its European design headquarters in London, to showcase the latest colour and paint technology and to highlight updates to the production models built at its Sunderland plant in north-east England.

The Micra will mark its upcoming fifth birthday with minor external changes, new interior trim and extra equipment.

These include a new Bluetooth-compatible audio system allowing hands-free telephone calls, MP3 player input and a speed limit warning system.
