A powertrain component problem has prompted Chrysler to idle four US assembly plants until at least the end of Monday, a local newspaper reported.

Chrysler LLC – which bills itself The New Chrysler – told the Detroit Free Press the four plants are Jefferson North in Detroit, Warren Truck (Michigan), Newark Assembly (New Jersey) and St. Louis North (Missouri).
“We have a supplier component issue within our powertrain operation and we’ve stopped building to prevent any of the potential engines that were affected to get into consumer hands,” a Chrysler spokeswoman told the Detroit Free Press. “There are no vehicles out in the field at this time that were affected.”
The paper said output of a range of Dodge and Chrysler brand truck and SUV models plus the Jeep Commander and Jeep Grand Cherokee were affected by the shut-down but added that three of the four plants had previously scheduled shutdown plans starting next week. The St. Louis plant is expected to continue operations on Tuesday, the ‘Freep’ added.
Next Monday is the annual Labour Day national holiday in the US.
