It claims the 1,500 litres load capacity is larger than any other premium-class estate in its segment. New features include an automatic tailgate.

Compared to the outgoing model, the new estate burns as much as 12% less fuel, Mercedes said. The C200 CDi turbodiesel version has an official NEDC consumption figure of six litres per 100km (62 miles) and a potential range of over 1,000km (620 miles) on a 66-litre tankful.

Like the sedan launched a few months ago, the wagon comes with a wide choice of engines and factory options and three trim levels – Classic, Elegance And Avantgarde; the latter has a different nose with a large Mercedes three-point star in the centre of the radiator grille.

Load area varies between 485 and 1500 litres depending on the position of the 1/3-2/3 split-folding rear seat. Maximum load area is up 146-litres compared with the outgoing model.

Two bag hooks and four load anchoring rings are standard along with several stowage compartments with net covers and a collapsible shopping crate pn all models, along with a combined luggage cover and retaining net.

The optional automatic tailgate, dubbed ‘Easy-Pack’ is a first in this segment, Mercedes claims. The option includes a load-securing kit for partitioning the load compartment and securing the load.

Mercedes also claims a class-beating towing capacity of up to 1,800kg. Self-levelling suspension is optional.
