“I want emissions limits to be set so that emissions of large cars are required to fall more than those of small cars,” he told a Berlin newspaper in an interview.
According to Automobilwoche, this contrasts with statements made by Gabriel two weeks ago in which he said that different CO2 emission requirements for different sized cars should not mean that large cars are required to make most of the CO2 savings. He said then that most savings would come from medium and small cars.
The European Commission is due to present a draft bill in December that will require vehicle manufacturers to cut average carbon dioxide emissions for new vehicles to 120g/km by 2012, from around 160g at present.
Last week Porsche threatened legal action if legislation favours small car producers over luxury car producers, thus distoring competition.
