The European version of Toyota’s redesigned Land Cruiser V8 will be unveiled at the St Petersburg motor show on 24 October and sales start in December, Toyota Motor Europe said.

The new model went on sale in Japan on Tuesday (18 September). Like Australia, where the model makes its global motor show debut in Sydney on 11 October, Europe will get both petrol and diesel V8 engine options, Japan – and the US – are petrol only.

The Landcruiser is built in seven plants worldwide and sold in 120 markets, Toyota US said in a statement. Sales there begin early next month.

Most new Land Cruisers sold in Europe will have the new 4.5-litre D-4D V8 diesel engine combined with a new six-speed automatic transmission. In European tune it develops 650Nm of torque from 1,600 to 2,800 rpm and 286hp at 3,600 rpm. Fuel consumption is 10.2l/100km, a 4% improvement compared with the outgoing 4.2-litre TD I6 engine, on the European combined cycle.

European versions will be also available with the improved 4.7 VVT-i V8 petrol engine (shared with Japan, Australia and other markets), combined with a five-speed automatic transmission, which develops 445Nm at 3,400 rpm and 288hp at 5,400rpm. This petrol engine has a fuel consumption of 14.4l/100km on the EU combined cycle, a 12% improvement. Both engines are Euro IV emissions-compliant.

United States models will have another new engine – a new 5.7-litre DOHC petrol V8 known as the 3UR-FE with direct ignition, four valves per cylinder, variable valve timing and a variable-length intake tract to produce 381hp at 5,600 rpm and 401lb-ft of torque at 3,600 rpm on regular 87-octane petrol. It has ULEV-II emissions status.

This engine comes with Toyota’s AB60F six-speed electronically controlled transmission in which both fifth and sixth are overdrive gears.

The transmission has ‘artificial intelligence (AI) shift control’ which allows the transmission’s electronic control module to estimate road condition and predict the driver’s intention to select the appropriate gear ratio for the vehicle’s speed and the driving conditions. It also has a sequential shift mode that allows the driver to select gears manually.

Toyota’s US unit expects to sell about 8,000 units of the new Land Cruiser a year. It also sells Lexus-badged variants and is due to launch a new model called the LX570 early next year.
