The first will be launched in the spring and is a ‘green’ version of the current Ibiza, badged the Ecomotive. The car delivers 74.3mpg and CO2 emissions of 99g/km from its 1.4-litre diesel engine.

“It’s late in the Ibiza’s life, but this model is politically significant and important in places such as London because it will be exempt under the proposed congestion charge changes.

“It’s also VED-exempt because it’s rated as Band A,” said a company spokesman.

An all-new version of the popular supermini will debut at next September’s Paris Motor Show. It’s the second new model for 2008 from SEAT, and will go on sale soon after the exhibition. Insiders say there will also be an Ecomotive variant of that car.

The third new model will be a twin-turbo version of the Leon.

The turbocharged supercharged machine – which will be badged Leon TSI – uses the same 1.4-litre petrol engine that’s in the VW Golf. It will create a new entry level Leon, with the key selling point being better fuel economy and lower emissions from a smaller engine than the 1.6-litre that’s the current base vehicle.
