“We are currently investigating the feasibility of additional North American production capacity,” CEO Stefan Jacoby said at the Los Angeles show.
“There are a number of factors that we need to consider in this decision and we will make an announcement in the next six months on whether or not we will proceed with this initiative.”
Industry observers have predicted that VW will set up another North American plant, probably in the US south, to offset the weak dollar’s effect on costing of exports from Europe.
The automaker previously operated a US plant in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania in the 1970s and 80s. This was set up by buying a part-completed assembly facility from Chrysler.
