BMW has received the relevant permissions from the Leipzig authorities to expand its assembly plant there.

According to dpa-AFX BMW can now build a new assembly hall and logistics are of 7,100 square metres. The additional space is needed to build the 1-series cabriolet alongside three-door hatchback and two-door coupe models, and the 3-series. The plant currently builds 700 cars a day.
BMW will invest around EUR11m euros to bring the new facilities on stream by the third quarter of 2009.
This latest investment is in top of EUR100m that will be invested in a new press plant in Leipzig. When production began in March 2005, Leipzig initially assembled only 3-series sedans using body panels pressed in BMW’s western German plants and engines built elsewhere. With the new plant Leipzig will also be able to doors, bonnets (hoods) and boot (trunk) lids in Leipzig.
