Japanese vehicle makers and electronics companies have increased basic monthly pay for the first time in five years, according to Kyodo News.

Toyota workers have won a 1,000 yen rise in basic monthly pay and a seniority-based annual increase of 6,900 yen, while Honda workers will only get the 6,900 yen annual increase.


They will also grant bonuses.


Japanese companies operating in the same industry sector tend to respond union demands in unison. Industry-wide wage talks known as ‘shunto’ are held each spring.


The wage rises by the two automakers reflect the strong financial performance of the companies and are not mirrored in other sectors.
