Volkswagen and its works council have begun talks about the future of the automaker’s component plants, according to dpa-AFX.

No specific dates for further meetings have been given. The company has presented the works council with an analysis of the current financial situation of the facilities. The next stage will be to develop some proposed strategies.


Volkswagen CEO Wolfgang Bernhard has previously said that some plants are financially viable, but others are far from being so. He has suggested that some plants should be sold or closed, something that the works council has said it would be against.


Group CEO Bernd Pischetsrieder has said this would not include engine or transmission plants.


In addition to powertrain components and assemblies, Volkswagen also produces axles, exhaust systems and seats. The most important component manufacturing sites are Kassel, Salzgitter und Braunschweig.
