“I don’t think the recalls are directly related to quality issues,” Sasaki said while attending the official opening event of Toyota’s E-GPC pan-European production training centre in Burnsaston, England, on Thursday.

“Cars are affected by many engineering and safety factors these days. For example, a few years ago most had just one airbag, now there are eight.”

He said he believed the increasing complexity of cars – and therefore more systems to go wrong – was the main reason for the rise in recalls rather than any worsening of quality.
