The Russian government is in talks with nine major foreign automakers on vehicle assembly in the country and may conclude several deals by 1 July, economic development and trade minister German Gref said at a meeting of his ministry’s extended board on Friday, according to Prime-Tass.

In early 2005 the Russian government ruled to eliminate or substantially reduce import duties on vehicle components for “industrial assembly” facilities that have an annual output of at least 25,000 vehicles.
After the ruling came into effect, Russian carmaker IzhAvto started assembling Kia vehicles and Severstal-Auto started assembling SsangYongs.
Additionally, Ford and Renault already assemble their vehicles in Russia, while Toyota is building a plant in St. Petersburg.
Volkswagen plans to build an assembly plant in the country, while DaimlerChrysler is considering assembling vehicles in Russia as well.
