Martin Winterkorn, head of Audi, was reported as saying that a model below the A3 is being considered. Above all the car should be ‘fun’, said Winterkorn. The newspaper article suggested the new model would be available as a three-door only at a base price of around EUR16,000. It will not have an expensive aluminium spaceframe and may even share a platform with the forthcoming VW Polo.
In a separate Q&A style interview with Automobilwoche, Winterkorn said that, in an effort to compete with Lexus levels of productivity, Audi is working on a new modular platform for cars above the A3. The platform would be variable in length and width, and could be the basis of a variety of body styles, including crossovers like the ‘Roadjet’ concept shown at Detroit.
Winterkornn defined ‘productivity’ as the ability to increase the volume of a particular platform, whilst expanding the variety of models.
