“If things go well and the market mirrors last year’s performance [when 1.5m units were sold], we should achieve this target,” he said.

The spokesman’s comments followed Peugeot’s announcement that it would launch its Czech Republic-built 107 model in late February. It hopes to sell 6,500 units this year.

Boosting turnover, Peugeot also plans to launch the new 207 in May and new petrol and diesel engines for the 407.

“We want to keep our place as the number three car seller,” in Spain, the spokesman said, adding that Peugeot will continue to spend heavily on marketing to boos the brand in Europe’s third-biggest car market.
