The joint venture sold 17,500 BMW cars in 2005, well below its capacity of 30,000 units. This year it is aiming to sell up to 25,000 cars.

The loss-making company’s new chief executive Qi Yumin told reporters in Hong Kong that “for a Chinese joint venture, it needs to boost its production scale.”

Brilliance is also hoping to triple sales of its own Zhonghua brand cars to 30,000 units, and increase minibus sales to 70,000 units in 2006, up from 60,000 in 2005.

The company is expected to record a loss for the 2005 financial year, but return to profit next year, thanks to lower steel prices.
