Launched in Japan in October last year, the model has attracted about 20,000 units there — well exceeding the 2,000 unit monthly sales target.

The North American Outlander will be powered by a new high performance, low emissions, and low fuel consumption three-litre V6 engine with a six-speed automatic transmission. The outgoing model has a 2.4-litre I4 motor though Japanese domestic versions also offered standard and turbocharged two-litre I4 engines.

The redesigned Outlander has an electronically controlled 4WD system well received in Japan and a front-wheel drive version specially tailored for the North American market.

As on the Japan market model, the US Outlander will have a newly design high-rigidity platform for improved impact safety and an aluminium roof panel that lowers the centre of gravity and reduces roll inertia for improved handling performance and ride.

The new Outlander also has a split tailgate (dubbed ‘flap-fold ‘) that allows the loading of different sizes and weights of luggage and an optional seven-seat layout that features two occasional-use third row seats stored flat under the floor.

The news Outlander also features Mitsubishi’s ‘Sportronic’ steering wheel paddle shifters that allow the driver to change gear manually without having to take his hand off the steering wheel.
