A report in Automotive News, citing Chinese supplier sources, said that Chrysler is talking to Chery about the project.
The report said that Chrysler is looking at whether it could build a global car through Chery and sell it around the world under the Chrysler or Dodge nameplate.
A Chrysler official who asked not to be identified, told AFP the company was talking with several Chinese automakers about the possibility of establishing a joint venture.
“We are talking with a number of potential partners,” the official told AFP.
“However, no specific agreement has been signed.”
The Automotive News report also said that Chrysler has confirmed that it is looking for a partner to make a small car for the US market (and made in the US) and that Volkswagen is among the candidates for that project. European and Asian carmakers are being considered for that project, the report said, with Chrysler shopping for an off-the-shelf platform to keep costs down.
