Apart from the expected mid-life exterior and interior styling tweaks, the 2007 Avensis has two new engines from Toyota’s latest generation of D-4D common rail diesel units.

They are the 175hp D-4D 180, which powers a new flagship T180 model, and the D-4D 130, a more powerful replacement for the previous two-litre D-4D engine, with additional gains in fuel consumption and lower exhaust emissions.

Toyota claims improved handling and ride for the updated car due to detail revisions to the steering and suspension.

The Avensis is built only at Toyota’s Burnaston factory, near Derby in Britain and has been exported to many markets including Japan.

Burnaston built 156,000 Avensis models last year, alongside 108,000 Corolla hatchbacks. A fully redesigned Corolla line is expected later this year.

Thanks to a recent additional £50m investment in new equipment, production capacity has been increased by 285,000 vehicles a year.
