The Chicago Tribune reports that the 2007 Chevrolet Impala will offer a 3.9-litre V6 engine capable of shutting off three cylinders when not needed in order to conserve fuel.

The report said that it will be the first GM V6 to offer cylinder deactivation, according to Chevrolet general manager Ed Peper, interviewed by the newspaper while in Chicago for a trade event.
GM now offers the system only in vehicles with V8 engines. With cylinder deactivation, the GM V6 will be rated at 20 miles per gallon city and 29 highway, up from 19 and 27 in the regular V6, the report said.
