Sales of new imported vehicles in Japan, including those made by domestic car makers abroad, rose 1.6% in June from a year earlier to 28,905 units, according to preliminary data an industry group released on Thursday.

Sales of vehicles built by foreign automakers rose 3.1% to 27,688 units, and sales of vehicles made by Japanese firms overseas dropped 23.9% to 1,217 units, the Japan Automobile Importers Association told Kyodo News.


BMW was the top selling imported brand for the month with sales of 6,011 units, up 18.2% from a year before for a 20.80% market share.


Mercedes-Benz ranked second, posting a 6.3% increase in sales to 5,918 units. It took a 20.47% market share.


Volkswagen came in third with a 17.82% market share. Its sales rose 3.8% to 5,151 units.


Audi was fourth with its sales down 7.3% to 1,612 units for a 5.58% market share.


Volvo placed fifth with a 5.34% share. Its sales dropped 12.5% to 1,544 units.
