Klinsmann surprised football fans by taking an un-fancied Germany team as far as the semi-finals of the competition. The groundswell of support for the home team has seemingly helped drive up the price of the VW, which is being auctioned off on ebay, from EUR105,000 ($US134,426) to over EUR300,000. The auction ends on Tuesday (11 July).

According to the details on the auction website, the blue 1967 VW convertible was driven by Klinsmann in 1994 and 1995 while playing at UK football club Tottenham Hotspur.

The car’s current owner, who lives in the Stuttgart suburb Boeblingen, has remained anonymous. But Klinsmann said recently: “I really couldn’t recommend bidding for that car. It was already completely rusty when I got rid of it.”

Last year an internet casino paid US$245,000 for a used Volkswagen Golf owned years earlier by Pope Benedict XVI.
