According to the Argentinean National Automaker’s Federation (Adefa), local automakers produced 178,236 vehicles, up 24.4% compared with the 143,203 units made in the same period last year.


Local sales rose 14.6% from the 196,187 vehicles sold in the first half of 2005 to 224,790 units between January and June this year.


Local automakers expect the domestic market to pass the second strongest sales result of 455,372 vehicles sold, achieved in 1998.


The best year was 1994, when 508,152 units were sold.


Volkswagen led the Argentine market in the first half of 2006, selling 43,839 vehicles for a 19.5% market share, including cars, light commercials, trucks and buses.


Ford was second with 32,225 units and 14.3%.


Chevrolet, which sells only cars, pick-ups and SUVs was third with 31,751 units and 14.1%.


Exports also increased. So far 94,033 locally-made vehicles have been shipped, a rise of 22.8% compared with the 76,550 in H1 2005.
