Toyota global vehicle sales dropped 3.1% in April from a year earlier to 849,306 vehicles. Overall overseas sales were down by 7.5% at 699.382 units. A bright spot was April sales in Japan which were up by 24.2% to 149,924 units – a jump impacted by a rebound in demand following earlier postponements made in anticipation of the discontinuation of an environmental performance-based vehicle tax.

China sales for Toyota were down 25.4% at 106,479 units, which Toyota said reflected the ongoing challenging market environment there. Sales in the Middle East plunged 33.7% ‌to just over 31,000 vehicles.

In Toyota’s biggest market – the US – April sales were were down 4.6% at 222,378 units. While demand for HEVs and other models remained solid, Toyota said sales declined year-on-year due to a decline following last year’s pre-tariff-driven demand, as well as the impact of the changeover to the all-new RAV4.

Overall Toyota production in the month of April was up 2% to 831,971 units, as second consecutive month of year-on-year gain.
