The optional system, a pricey £2,175 in the UK, is available factory-installed on A3 and A4 models from February, and is derived from the Multi Media Interface (MMI) system launched with the A8 luxury sedan.

The DVD-based sat-nav has a memory 10 times larger than a CD ROM system, enabling greater data storage for more comprehensive, more detailed mapping and faster route calculation times. Road maps covering virtually the whole of Western Europe are now contained within one DVD and new pictograms give direction, distance and arrival time information.

The new sat-nav also features a claimed unique split screen facility which displays route instructions directly alongside the main map, and warns of turns and motorway exits well before they are reached.

The latest system is based on the integrated MMI system in the A8 but function keys and screen layouts have been simplified for this second-generation version, which features a 6.5-inch colour screen that slides down at the touch of a button to reveal the navigation DVD drive and two MP3 memory card slots.
