Volvo Cars has selected Aptiv’s Gen 8 radar platform for deployment across future vehicle models, with production set to begin in 2028.

The Gen 8 platform is Aptiv’s latest “scalable”, “high-resolution” radar sensing technology and is based on the company’s proprietary antenna and silicon design.

The system is intended to support a range of safety and advanced driver assistance system (ADAS) functions as both companies continue developing software-defined vehicle architectures.

Volvo Cars software engineering head Alwin Bakkenes said: “Volvo Cars has always been guided by a belief that safety should be designed around people and real‑world driving conditions. Aptiv’s Gen 8 radar platform helps us deliver even more robust perception capabilities to our advanced driver assistance systems across increasingly complex environments and driving scenarios”

According to Aptiv, the radar platform is designed to deliver more accurate angular measurement and improved target differentiation in complex driving situations.

The technology is also aimed at enhancing performance in adverse weather conditions and dense urban settings.

The platform includes integration features intended to improve fusion with cameras and other perception sensors, while its scalable architecture is designed to support deployment across multiple vehicle platforms and international markets.

Aptiv said the agreement reflects a shared emphasis on vehicle safety, aligning its perception technologies with Volvo Cars’ long-standing focus on reducing accidents and injuries.

Both companies are continuing to adapt their vehicle portfolios around software-defined systems.

Aptiv sensors and compute senior vice president Matthew Cole added: “Volvo Cars’ commitment to protecting people inside and outside the vehicle has set the benchmark for automotive safety.

“We are proud to support Volvo Cars as they continue advancing their safety ambitions across future vehicle programs.”

Earlier this month, Aptiv and Italy’s Comau announced a collaboration to explore the co-development of next-generation intelligent automation technologies aimed at helping industrial customers improve safety, efficiency and autonomous operations.
