Jaguar officials told union representatives on Wednesday that the decision had been taken after the success of the launch of the XJ saloon, the continued high quality of the XJ and XK and the continued commitment of the Browns Lane workforce to the Jaguar brand.

Industry pundits have long suggested that Jaguar close Browns Lane, which assembles cars using bodies from Castle Bromwich near Birmingham and engines from a Ford plant in Wales.

Amicus national officer for the car industry, Duncan Simpson, said: “There will be celebrating at Brown’s Lane tonight. The decision is excellent news, the workforce has been operating under a cloud for too long and we hope this is the start of continued investment and new models to secure the future for the site.”
