The first batch assembled this month is scheduled for delivery to US homebuilder Clayton.
Manufacturing takes place at Volvo Trucks’ New River Valley plant in Dublin, Virginia.
The facility supplies all Volvo-branded trucks for the North American market and is the company’s largest production site worldwide.
Volvo has invested $400m in recent upgrades at the site, including a 350,000ft² cab-welding facility alongside improvements to paint operations and internal material handling.
Volvo Trucks North America president Peter Voorhoeve said: “Built on a completely new platform – 90% new compared with the legacy model – the Volvo VNR is purpose-built for navigating congested city streets, distribution centres, and urban routes where visibility, precision, and agility are critical.”
Compared with its predecessor, the new VNR is projected to achieve up to 7.5% better fuel efficiency through aerodynamic refinements, powertrain changes and idle-shutdown technology.
It also introduces an expanded Volvo safety suite featuring integrated side-curtain airbags, enhanced forward sightlines from a sloped bonnet and panoramic windscreen, and camera-based visibility systems suited to dense urban settings.
Developed on Volvo’s new truck architecture shared with the long-haul VNL, the VNR has a tighter turning circle for city use and is available in several Class 8 layouts.
Customers can choose between Core and Edge trims and a range of axle and suspension combinations.
Engine options include Volvo’s VGT units and the D13 Turbo Compound, with low-NOx versions also offered.
The start of VNR assembly follows the launch of the new VNL long-haul truck and aligns with Volvo Trucks’ approach of delivering purpose-built vehicles aimed at improving efficiency, safety and uptime in both regional and long-distance fleet operations.
