Nissan is to enter the Indian passenger vehicle market for the first time with the X-Trail SUV, writes just-auto managing editor Dave Leggett from India. Speaking at the Auto Expo show in New Delhi, Nissan general manager Yasuaki Hashimoto said that Nissan plans to commence sales of the vehicle in India in the middle of 2004.

Industry sources told just-auto that Nissan’s entry to the Indian passenger vehicle market has been a long time coming and that the company’s previous plans to enter the market here were hit by homologation problems.
Nissan claims that the X-Trail meets the Indian market need for a ‘versatile, sophisticated yet authentic SUV’. Nissan declined to reveal sales targets for the X-Trail in India but sources said that initial volumes would probably be around 60-80 units per month. Nissan is not currently planning to follow the X-Trail with other imported models.
