According to Reuters, Honda said it planned to add a further shift at its Swindon plant to bring the total number of jobs to 4,900 due to demand for its new Civic five-door and three-door models [hatchback versions so far built only in the UK and sold only here in Europe].

Honda reportedly said in a statement it expected to produce 190,000 cars at the plant in 2006 and this would increase to 250,000 by the end of 2007.

The new Honda CR-V, which made its debut at the Paris Motor Show on Thursday, would also be built in Swindon, the company said, according to Reuters.

Swindon previously built a proportion of US-bound CR-Vs but this arrangement ended some time ago. US exports of a sporty Civic three-door hatchback ended with the Civic model changeover late last year.
