Foxconn and Mitsubishi Fuso Truck and Bus Corporation (MFTBC) plan to establish a new bus-focused manufacturer in Japan to develop and produce zero-emission models.

Taiwan’s Hon Hai Technology Group, better known as Foxconn, and Japan’s MFTBC said the venture will combine MFTBC’s bus engineering and manufacturing experience with Foxconn’s zero-emission vehicle technologies and global partner network.

As a bus-dedicated original equipment manufacturer (OEM), the company will focus on launching electric buses for domestic and overseas markets, while continuing to refine internal combustion engine models.

The new company is expected to be created in the second half of 2026, subject to board, shareholder and regulatory approvals, with closing targeted for the same period.

MFTBC confirmed that Katsuto Kora, currently director and head of FUSO BUS, will become CEO of the new entity, which will be headquartered in Kawasaki city.

Kora said: “The new joint venture will integrate the corporate cultures of both companies, blending Japan’s spirit of manufacturing excellence with Foxconn’s agility and technological prowess. Given the extensive existing partnerships of both shareholders, we expect even broader collaboration opportunities in the field of future technologies in the years to come.”

The plan follows an earlier memorandum of understanding between the two groups to explore cooperation in clean mobility.

Via their subsidiaries, Mitsubishi Fuso Bus Manufacturing and Foxtron Vehicle Technologies, the companies intend to collaborate on development, manufacturing, supply chain management, and sales of zero-emission buses.

The collaboration will begin with Foxtron’s MODEL T and MODEL U platforms.

The partners said the venture aims to meet demand for high-quality public transport by accelerating the rollout of electric buses alongside an existing diesel portfolio.

Development and production will be carried out at the Toyama plant under the FUSO name, which has more than 90 years of history as a commercial vehicle brand.

Localised sourcing, production and sales operations are expected to help meet Japanese regulatory and quality standards.

Foxconn’s zero-emission vehicle capabilities, technology base and international partnerships are set to support the venture’s efforts to market its buses in Japan and abroad.
