Originally launched in 1995, and planned originally as a domestic-market model only, the CR-V created a new segment in the SUV market by combining the comfort of a passenger car with outstanding everyday practicality.
After Honda distributors worldwide clamoured for it (New Zealand, which could take Japanese-specification models, got it first), the CR-V went on to amass total sales of more than 2.5m vehicles in 160 countries.
The Japanese-market model, like the US version, has a 2.4-litre petrol engine – Europe gets two-litre petrol and 2.2-litre diesel motors.
Japanese specification include stability control and electronic ‘drive-by-wire’ throttle. A new feature is the passenger side door mirror with built-in prism under-mirror, eliminating the need for the fender-mounted side under-mirror that usually distinguishes domestic-market SUVs from similar models sold overseas.
