Autonomous driving technology firm WeRide has commenced the world’s first 24-hour fully driverless ride-hailing service with Robotaxi GXR in the Huangpu District of Guangzhou, China.

This service, which it claims is the first of its kind to offer point-to-point trips in a major city’s central urban area, is accessible to passengers through the WeRide Go app, enabling users to hail the Robotaxi GXR at any time within the district.

The company’s journey to this milestone involved an 11-month process from the introduction of the Robotaxi GXR in October last year, through road testing, securing necessary certifications and licences, to achieving the transition to a fully driverless service.

The GXR, designed specifically for mass production, is equipped with level 4 autonomous driving technology.

It operates on the HPC 3.0 high-performance computing platform, powered by Nvidia’s latest dual Drive AGX Thor processors.

This setup enables the vehicle to perform over 20 quadrillion operations per second, making it capable of navigating complex urban environments.

According to WeRide, its Sensor Suite 5.6 is adept at maintaining visibility in adverse conditions, such as fog, dim light, and rain, and can accurately detect other vehicles, pedestrians, and construction areas.

The GXR’s redundancy system, encompassing its architecture, steer-by-wire chassis, braking systems, and computing units, is designed to eliminate single-point failures and ensure the safety of its passengers.

The GXR’s open-concept design provides ample cabin space, legroom, and a dedicated luggage area that can accommodate up to five passengers.

WeRide has introduced the first monetisation of public robotaxi services in China with a launch in November 2019, providing coverage across roughly 145 square kilometres of open roads in Guangzhou’s Huangpu District.

By this May, the network had expanded to include key locations and transportation hubs across the city.

WeRide continues to focus on enhancing its autonomous driving technology and expanding its fully driverless taxi services.

In August 2025, WeRide, in partnership with Bosch, unveiled WePilot AiDrive, an advanced driver assistance system.
