South Korean tyre manufacturer Nexen Tire Corporation has announced that it has installed a new hi-tech driving simulator at its Nexen UniverCity central research institute in Seoul, which it says will help speed up new product development and cut costs.

Nexen claims its new High Dynamic Driving Simulator (HDDS) is the first advanced driving simulator in South Korea to use virtual reality and artificial intelligence (AI) technologies. The company said the new facility represents a “key turning point in advancing tyre research and development (R&D) with VR and AI technologies.”

Nexen said the HDDS is an advanced system that simulates real-world conditions in a virtual environment. By applying vehicle specifications and actual road-like parameters, the system “enables testing of acceleration, steering response, braking, and other performance metrics in a variety of driving conditions.”

Nexen said the new HDDS will help accelerate new tyre development, by helping to minimize unnecessary trial-and-error stages, reduce prototype production and real vehicle testing, and accelerate innovation while cutting costs. “By replacing costly and time-intensive physical road tests with virtual evaluations, engineers can conduct more precise tyre development within a limited space and in various conditions.”

Nexen said the new simulator will also allow it to respond more rapidly and accurately to the performance requirements of global automakers, from electrified to high-performance vehicles.

The company pointed out that global automakers are “rapidly transitioning to virtual development processes to shorten development cycles and improve cost efficiency. Major European premium brands already ause driving simulators in their virtual test and development (VTD) processes, while South Korean automakers are also advancing their virtual vehicle development capabilities.”
