The trade union side of the Jaguar joint negotiating committee met yesterday (13 November) to discuss the ballot result.

Workers at the automaker’s Halewood, Castle Bromwich, Coventry and Whitley facilities, voted 1,878 in favour and 2,101 against the pay package, though the Transport and General Workers Union (T&G) continues to recommend they accept it.

T&G said that more detailed consultations would now take place with shop stewards in the plants before a decision on the next step is taken.

Jaguar told just-auto: “The company is very disappointed that employees have voted against the company’s final offer, which had been recommended for acceptance by national and local union officials.

“This is a fair and balanced package of pay and conditions, which would provide them with the best possible security in the long term, as well as seeking to help secure the competitive position of the company.”

The package offer also included the option of further annual inflation-related increases plus 0.5% and 3% rises in 2007 and 2008 for the workers.
