Hyundai Motor India will be shipping 1,000 units of its Santro Xing small car to Mexico. The earlier version of the Santro is already sold in Mexico as the Dodge Atos and the facelifted Santro Xing will now be sold under this name. Until now the Mexican Dodge Atos was shipped from Korea but will now come from Hyundai’s plant in India.
The Indian plant at Irrungattukottai is now Hyundai’s sole production base for the Santro though Inokom in Malaysia makes an earlier version of the car. Hyundai has a 20% stake in Inokom.
The Hyundai Santro Xing will be sold in Mexico as the Dodge Atos thanks to Mexican legislation that doesn’t allow any manufacturer not having a local production base to import and sell cars. Thus Hyundai can only sell the Santro/Atos through DaimlerChrysler in Mexico.
Hyundai India has already shipped a small batch of cars and a further consignment of about 1,000 will be shipped shortly.
The Dodge Atos is sold in two versions in Mexico with the base model carrying a price tag of INR280,000 (about €4,900) and the Atos Luxury priced at INR340,000 (about €5,900).
