Hyundai Motor Company announced it has signed an agreement to supply a fleet of hydrogen fuel-cell powered waste collection trucks to the Busan City government, as South Korea’s second-largest city continues to transition its public sector fleet to zero emission vehicles.
Hyundai unveiled two hydrogen-powered waste collection trucks based on its Xcient heavy-duty truck platform at an event held at Busan City Hall, as the municipal government begins to replace its aging fleet of diesel-powered garbage trucks.

The city aims to have a fleet of 65 hydrogen fuel-cell powered waste disposal trucks in operation by 2028, with Hyundai scheduled to deliver five units by the end of 2025 before volumes are stepped up in 2026.
A Hyundai spokesperson confirmed his company “will ensure timely production and delivery of the hydrogen waste trucks to support Busan’s air quality improvement efforts.” Busan City officials also pointed out that the quieter and vibration-free hydrogen-powered trucks will significantly improve working conditions for waste collection workers.
