According to Reuters, the Nihon Keizai daily said on Monday that the company, owned one-third by Ford, would consolidate its sales channels over the next four to five years to boost efficiency.

“The report is based on speculation. We have no such plans,” a Mazda spokesman told the news agency.

Reuters noted that Mazda, pushing a restructuring of its domestic dealer network, said last month that it would expand the product line-up at each of its three domestic dealer channels starting on March 1 in a bid to boost sales.

Mazda’s domestic sales totaled 277,689 units in 2003, up 5.6 percent from the year before, the report said.

According to Reuters, the firm has 890 Mazda and Mazda Anfini showrooms, which under the February move will have a complete range of Mazda products, and 348 Mazda Autozam dealers, mostly located in rural areas.
