Japanese automaker Mitsubishi Motors Corporation announced this week that it has signed a preliminary agreement to source a battery electric vehicle (BEV) model from Foxtron Vehicle Technologies Company, the automotive subsidiary of Taiwanese electronics giant Hon Hai Precision Industry Company Ltd, starting next year.

The deal represents a major step forward for Hon Hai, Apple’s main iPhone manufacturing sub-contractor, in its aim to become a major global BEV contract assembler. In 2020, the company unveiled its MIH (Mobility in Harmony) in-house BEV platform, designed to provide global automakers with a fast, low-cost entry strategy into the BEV segment – backed by a ready-made supply chain.

Under the memorandum of understanding (MOU), Foxtron has agreed to develop a new BEV model based on its MIH open platform, which Mitsubishi will sell locally and export to markets in the Asia-Pacific region, including Australia and New Zealand, from the second half of 2026. The vehicle will have “excellent driving performance” and feature an advanced infotainment system, according to the automaker.

Production of the new model will be carried out by Yulon Motor Company Ltd, Nissan Motor’s Taiwanese vehicle production partner, with Foxtron providing “manufacturing management services.”  Mitsubishi and Foxtron have now decided to proceed with further discussions to finalize the deal.

Mitsubishi said it is exploring additional opportunities to expand its collaboration with its Alliance partners, which include Nissan and Renault, to strengthen its electrified vehicle lineup in key regional markets.
