From the ‘Only-In-America’ file: two families – the Rosenfelds in Los Angeles and the Dooners Philadelphia have each won a Dodge Magnum in a contest by burying their respective vehicles – a 1998 Toyota Camry and 1997 Mercury Mountaineer – tail-side-up in their front yards.

As winners of the DaimlerChrysler Dodge brand’s Bury Your Car contest, the Rosenfelds and the Dooners bid farewell to their family vehicles in a mock funeral with pallbearers, a procession and a tombstone bearing the fateful inscription “Rust In Peace.”
In June, Dodge asked entrants why they wanted to put their current vehicles to rest and offered winners a new 2005 Magnum in exchange. For a week, ads in LA and Philadelphia county local papers invited residents to take part in the ‘ultimate swap’ and bury their current vehicle in their front yard in exchange for a new car.
The ads directed readers to a website where they could enter. The contest included submitting an essay on why the entrants believed they should win the chance to bury their vehicle in exchange for the new Magnum, as well as a series of questions about physical size/shape of residence, location of residential utilities, topography of entrant’s front yard and current car make and model.
More than 250 Los Angeles County and 100 Philadelphia County residents entered, Chrysler said in a statement.
