The APV, newly developed as a global strategy model, will be exported to ASEAN and other countries as well as marketed in Indonesia. SMC plans to invest 11.5 billion yen to produce 70,000 units per year.

The APV model range consists of a passenger van that can accommodate up to 8 people for family use, a commercial van for business use and a pick-up truck. The pick-up truck version will be marketed as the ‘Carry’, using a name previously attached to a tiny van and pickup line built in Japan.

By largely refurbishing the existing production lines at ISI and localising parts production to 70% produced within the ASEAN region, SMC has reduced the production cost of the APV, which has resulted in competitive retail pricing.

T van and people carrying ATVs have four hinged doors, rather than rear sliding doors for what Suzuki calls a “passenger-car atmosphere”.

The 175mm ground clearance and high air intake are intended for driving on unpaved or flooded roads in the ASEAN region and the air conditioner and engine radiator performance have been enhanced for use in high temperature climates.

Engines are 1.5- and 1.6-litre, 16 valve, SOHC, inline four-cylinder petrol units.
