According to Reuters, in a lawsuit filed in California in mid-July, the families of the accident victims said Ford and Enterprise Rent-A-Car failed to alert the passengers of the potential dangers of driving the rented 15-passenger Econoline E-350 van – which had a number of design and manufacturing defects, the lawsuit said.

Ford spokeswoman Kathleen Vokes reportedly said a California Highway Patrol report states the accident was a result of an error by the driver, who had been awake for about 19 hours, and had driven for seven continuous hours.

Ford also faces a series of lawsuits over alleged safety defects with its popular Explorer sport utility vehicles, Reuters noted.
